Man with a Van Melbourne

Not every move needs a big truck. Our man with a van service suits small moves and single items anywhere in Melbourne: a studio or one-bedroom flat, a few pieces of furniture, a new couch from the shop or a Marketplace pick-up.

Good jobs for a man with a van

  • Studio, student and small one-bedroom moves
  • Single items such as a fridge, couch, bed or washing machine
  • Marketplace, Gumtree and store pick-ups and deliveries
  • Moving a few items into or out of a storage unit
  • Small office or shop moves

Need two movers for heavy or bulky items? Just ask. For a full home, see house removals.

What we can move for you

Most things that fit through a door and into a van. The jobs we are called out for most often look like this:

  • Single appliances — fridges, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers. Please defrost and drain anything that holds water the night before.
  • Couches, armchairs and bed frames — we bring blankets and straps, and we will take a bed frame apart if that is what it takes to get it out the door.
  • Mattresses — a mattress bag keeps it clean on a wet day. We sell them alongside boxes and packing supplies in our shop.
  • Desks, bookshelves and flat-pack furniture — flat-pack travels better dismantled, and some of it will not survive being carried assembled.
  • Boxes and odds and ends — a car boot’s worth, or twenty boxes. Have them packed and sealed before we arrive.
  • A few items into or out of a storage unit — we do not run a storage facility ourselves, but we will move your things to or from a unit you have booked.

If you are not sure whether something will fit, or whether it needs two people, send a photo through WhatsApp and we will tell you straight.

Marketplace, Gumtree and store pick-ups

A good share of our van work is a single purchase that will not fit in a car. It goes more smoothly when a few things are sorted first:

  • Confirm the pick-up window with the seller before you book us, and get their address and a mobile number.
  • Check who is lifting at the other end. Plenty of sellers will not help carry. Tell us if the item is upstairs or needs two people and we will send two movers.
  • Measure the doorway, not just the item. A couch that fits the van may still not turn into a narrow hallway.
  • Ask whether it comes apart. Table legs off and bed slats out is often the difference between a quick job and a long one.

We can do the reverse as well — collecting something from you and delivering it to a buyer on the other side of Melbourne.

When a van is enough, and when you need a truck

The van suits small loads. Once you are past about a room of furniture, a truck and two movers is usually faster and better value, because the job is done in fewer hours and in one trip instead of several.

  • Van and man, from $40 per half hour. One or two items, a studio or small one-bedroom, marketplace pick-ups, a run to or from a storage unit.
  • 4.5 tonne truck and two movers, from $55 per half hour. A one or two-bedroom home or unit, or a single heavy item that takes two people to carry.
  • 6.5 tonne truck and two movers, from $60 per half hour. Larger homes and offices, and loads the van would need several trips to shift.

Not sure which one fits? Tell us roughly what is going and where it is going from, and we will tell you which option we would send. Furniture blankets, trolleys and straps are included either way, and we are fully insured.

How the price works

We charge by the hour and confirm the rate before the job — our removalist prices page sets out the hourly rates for each truck and crew size. To keep it quick, have everything ready to go, make sure there’s parking close to the door, and tell us about stairs or lifts when you book.

Please note: we don’t offer a packing service, so have boxes packed and sealed before we arrive.

What makes a small move take longer

We charge by the half hour, so the things that eat time are the things that cost money. These are the ones we see most:

  • Distance from the door to the van. A long driveway, a shared car park or a walk around the building adds up over every trip.
  • Stairs without a lift. A second-floor walk-up takes noticeably longer to carry than a ground-floor flat with the same amount in it.
  • Packing that is not finished. Loose items have to be carried one at a time. Sealed boxes stack and move quickly.
  • Furniture that still needs dismantling. If it has to come apart on the day, that time is part of the job.
  • Nowhere to park. Parking a street away is the single most expensive thing that can happen to a small move.

Stairs, lifts and parking

Most of the small moves we do are flats and units, so access is usually what decides how long the job runs.

If there is a lift, check with the building manager whether it has to be booked and whether there is a loading dock or service entrance. Some buildings in the inner north and the city want a booking days in advance, and a few will not allow moves at the weekend at all.

If there is no lift, tell us the floor when you book. It changes nothing about whether we will take the job, but it changes how long we allow for it and whether we send two movers.

For parking, the ideal is a legal spot within sight of the door. If the street is permit-only or metered, a temporary parking permit from your council is usually worth the trouble. Tell us what the street is like and we will plan around it.

What to tell us when you book

A short message with these details is usually enough for us to give you a straight answer on van or truck, how many movers, and roughly how long it should take:

  • What is going — a list, or a photo of the room
  • The pick-up and drop-off suburbs and addresses
  • Which floor at each end, and whether there is a lift
  • What the parking is like at both ends
  • Anything heavy, fragile or awkward — a fridge, a glass table top, a treadmill
  • The date, and whether you have any flexibility on it

Small moves across Melbourne

We are based in Campbellfield and we cover the whole of Melbourne. The northern suburbs are where we do most of our work — Reservoir, Preston, Coburg, Brunswick and Campbellfield — and a van job in those suburbs is usually easy for us to fit in at short notice.

We also work across the western, eastern and south-eastern suburbs, the inner city and regional Victoria. For moves between states we cover New South Wales, the ACT and South Australia only — see interstate removals.

Frequently asked questions

Can one person move my item?

Some items can be moved by one person with a trolley. Heavy items such as fridges, couches and washing machines usually need two movers. We will tell you what is needed when you enquire.

Can you pick up something I bought online?

Yes. Send us the pick-up and drop-off suburbs and a photo of the item.

Do you work weekends?

Yes, 7 days a week, subject to availability.

How much does a man with a van cost in Melbourne?

Our van and man starts at $40 per half hour, and we confirm the rate with you before the job starts. What you pay comes down to how long it takes, which is mostly a question of access, parking and how ready everything is. Nothing is added afterwards that we have not told you about.

Do you bring blankets and trolleys?

Yes. Furniture blankets, trolleys and straps come with every job at no extra cost.

Are you insured?

Yes, we are fully insured. Our insurance page explains what that covers.

Will you pack my boxes for me?

No — we do not offer a packing service. Have your boxes packed and sealed before we arrive. We do sell boxes, tape and packing supplies in our shop if you still need them.

Do you offer storage?

No, we do not have a storage facility. We will gladly move your things to or from a storage unit you have booked yourself.

Can you move a piano in the van?

No — a piano needs the right crew and the right approach, and it is a job of its own. See piano removals.

How far ahead should I book?

For a weekday van job in the northern suburbs we can often help at short notice. Weekends, the end of the month and the end of a lease are the busiest times, so give us as much notice as you can for those.

What if my things do not all fit in the van?

We will usually tell you before the day if we think they will not. If it turns out on the day that the load needs more room, we will talk you through the options rather than leave you stuck — normally that means a second run, or a truck instead of the van.
